Training as a "Securities Administrator"




"Securities Administrator" - a multi-faceted profession
The key feature of the day-to-day work in the national and international processing of securities is its fascinating and diverse range of tasks. The "Securities Administrator" in the Securities Back Office represents an important and central link in a very complex specific area of the financial industry. Sound and extensive training in the securities business is essential for successfully pursuing this career. The work of a "Securities Administrator" can not only represent an ever-increasing challenge but also serve as a springboard for a senior position in the financial sector.
 
Areas of tasks
Thanks to the job holder's excellent theoretical knowledge, comprehensive practical experience and corresponding operational expertise the "Securities Administrator" is empowered to work in the following areas within the Securities Back Office:

  • Corporate Actions/Entitlements: Corporate actions cover the processing of corporate and special actions such as increases in capital, splits, purchase or swap offers, takeovers and mergers. This area also includes processing interest payments and/or repayments as well as drawing lots.
  • Middle Office/Settlement: In this area domestic and international securities transactions are processed independently, from accounting through to settlement. This work also includes the reconciliation of stock exchange/broker accounts and custody account statements, clearing up discrepancies as well as close collaboration with other internal departments.
  • Deliveries: This area involves independently processing receipts and deliveries from/for clients and client banks, both in electronic as well as physical form. The tasks also include dealing with the registration and de-registration of registered shares.
 
Target group
The course is aimed at young, dynamic career-switchers who want to receive training in the core business of the Securities Back Office and who match the following profile of requirements:

  • Commercial or vocational apprenticeship in a technical area, plus additional commercial training or university entrance exam or commercial college, with or without practical experience in the career
  • Good knowledge of English (at least first level)
  • Age: 20 to 30 years
           
Training concept
The theoretical part of the training is conducted through the "Netzwerk für betriebswirtschaftliche Weiterbildung (NbW)" [Network for Further Training in Business Administration (NbW)] in Zurich. This institute provides an excellent team of lecturers with proven practical experience, together with teaching materials geared towards the requirements of the course. The 27 week training course includes a placement lasting 18 weeks in total during which the participants undergo intensive training. Regular monitoring and assessment is conducted during the entire practical and theoretical training. Expert support for the participants is guaranteed throughout the entire training period.

On completion of the training course and after passing the final exam, graduates will possess sound specialist knowledge as well as comprehensive practical know-how which will enable them to work successfully within the various individual areas of the specialist departments.
 
Training content
The following topics are dealt with in the theoretical training:

  • Basics of banking
  • Securities
  • Bookkeeping (cash, equities, portfolio types, options etc.)
  • Processing (in two parts: 1. Basics as well as a more specialised and client-specific focus and 2. Special aspects)
  • Stock exchange (order, trading, processing)
  • Funds
  • Corporate actions (types and features) incl. interest and dividend payments, capital repayments
  • So-called "non trade transactions" (receipts and deliveries, transfers)
  • Clearing and settlement (organisations, receipt or delivery in return for payment, reconciliation etc.)
  • Additional modules
 
The practical training is divided into two parts:

  • During the first placement the participants gain an insight into the various areas of activity in the Securities Back Office.
  • During the second part the participants undergo special "on the job" training in order to acquire the necessary operational expertise for their future jobs.

1. Introductory course: first part of the theoretical training at the Institut NbW in Zurich
2. First placement: traineeships in various areas of the Securities Back Office at Bank Vontobel AG, Zurich
3. Holidays: two weeks holidays for all participants (22 Dec. 2008 to 2 Jan. 2009)
4. Intensified course: second part of the theoretical training at the Institut NbW in Zurich and Bank Vontobel AG, Zurich
5. Practical integration: "on the job" training in the Securities Back Office of Bank Vontobel AG, Zurich
6. Final week: repetition and exams at the Institut NbW in Zurich as well as at Bank Vontobel AG, Zurich
7. Quality assurance measures: interim testing and final exam (the final exam comprises a theoretical and a practical part)
8. End of the course: Friday, 27 March 2009, graduation ceremony/presentation of certificates.

Number of participants
The maximum number of participants for the theoretical training is 20, four of whom are employed with Bank Vontobel AG.
 
Conditions of employment
  • The employment relationship commences on the first day of the training.
  • The theoretical training (basic and intensified course plus repetition) will be conducted at the Institut NbW in Zurich. The placement will be carried out at Bank Vontobel AG in Zurich.
  • Throughout the entire training the participants will be paid 90% of their salary. On successful completion of the training the participants will be paid 100% of the agreed salary.
  • Bank Vontobel AG will meet all the training costs providing the participant remains employed with the Bank for at least two additional years following the successful completion of the training course. In the event of the contract of employment being terminated prematurely the employee gives an undertaking to reimburse the training costs on a pro rata basis.
