Vontobel endows professorships in Financial Engineering and Molecular Cancer Research at the University of Zurich

Bank Vontobel AG and the Vontobel Foundation are making an endowment to the Swiss Banking Institute for the creation of a full professorship in Financial Engineering to mark the 175th anniversary of the University of Zurich. The Vontobel Foundation is also providing the Faculty of Medicine with funding for the establishment of an assistant professorship in Molecular Cancer Research. The first holders of the Hans Vontobel Chair in Financial Engineering and the Hans Vontobel Assistant Professorship in Molecular Cancer Research are to be appointed in autumn 2008.

The Professorship in Financial Engineering at the Swiss Banking Institute will be held by an internationally recognized expert, who will work directly with the Swiss financial centre while retaining an independent academic perspective. A programme in Financial Engineering will also be established at the Swiss Banking Institute.

"Every company has a duty to engage in initiatives that benefit society. The endowment of a professorship at the Swiss Banking Institute represents a further addition to the range of educational programmes and measures already supported by Bank Vontobel and the Vontobel Foundation. I consider the preservation of Switzerland's competitive position as a centre of research to be as important as its continued competitiveness as a financial centre," stated Dr Hans Vontobel.

Prof. Thorsten Hens added: "Both parties will benefit from this commitment. As academics, we will gain an opportunity to work directly with the Zurich financial centre in the area of financial engineering. At the same time, the financial centre will benefit from new academic insights in this field, as well as gaining a new generation of highly-qualified financial engineers."

In addition, the Vontobel Foundation is providing funding for the establishment of an assistant professorship in Molecular Cancer Research, which will also be named after Dr Hans Vontobel. The creation of this academic post is aimed primarily at promoting research and teaching in this area, which involves studying the molecular aspects of the process of carcinogenesis.

Dr Hans Vontobel played a significant role in shaping the development of Bank Vontobel over many years and today serves as its Honorary Chairman. He established the Vontobel Foundation, which supports charitable causes, in 1993.
