A new perspective

Photography can open up a new perspective on the present, make us question our reality, and expand our horizons. Launched in 2017, A New Gaze is intended as a steppingstone for emerging artists, enabling an international artist to implement an idea for a project from its conception through to the exhibition and accompanying catalog.

Awarded every two years, each edition of Vontobel’s sponsorship prize focuses on a new geographical region and socially relevant topic, to promote and convey alternative views from around the globe. Complimenting the company’s Art Collection, the award further emphasizes Art Vontobel’s philanthropic approach and highlights our intention to foster the next generation.

A New Gaze 5 presents Jiajia Zhang

With the theme “Switzerland 2084”, the fifth edition of A New Gaze looked closer to home, inviting artists to reflect on the country’s future. Jiajia Zhang translates this premise into a dynamic artistic approach, seamlessly blending photography, text, sculptural elements, and video to construct an open-ended inquiry.

Learn more about the artist and her award-winning project And in 2084, You Are 62, which will be presented in a solo exhibition accompanied by a catalogue at our headquarters in Zürich. The exhibition will be open to the public from 5 June 2026.

Jiajia Zhang

The artist Jiajia Zhang (b. 1981, Hefei, China) was selected by our expert jury as the winner of the fifth edition of the Art Vontobel sponsorship prize A New Gaze. Endowed with CHF 20,000, it supports emerging contemporary artists working in the field of photographic art, and is widely regarded as a springboard for rising talent. In addition to the grant, the production of the final exhibition and its accompanying catalogue is also provided.

 

Winners

The objective is a new view, from a different perspective, on a topic that is currently preoccupying us. Winners of «A New Gaze» get the chance to realize a piece of work of their choice within the realm of contemporary photography.
