Vontobel Asset Management launches new emerging market debt fund with USD 160 million
Published on 08.09.2017 CEST
Vontobel Asset Management, a specialized Swiss multi-boutique asset manager, has expanded its emerging market fixed income offering by launching a new emerging market debt fund, Vontobel Fund – Emerging Markets Debt (1). The fund is managed by 5 star-manager (2) Luc D'hooge and invests in emerging bonds denominated in hard currencies.
Emerging market fixed income has gained greatly in prominence in recent years. Emerging economies’ strong growth, low debt and improving credit ratings are making the asset class look increasingly attractive to investors, and it can also provide excellent diversification benefits to a balanced portfolio. Emerging market bonds denominated in hard currencies, such as the US dollar and euro, provide investors with exposure to the asset class without the high potential volatility inherent in emerging currencies.
Vontobel Fund – Emerging Markets Debt is actively managed, aiming to outperform the JP Morgan EMBI Global Diversified TR by 125 basis points per year over rolling three-year periods. The fund is run from Zurich by Luc D’hooge, Head of Emerging Market Fixed Income, who has more than 20 years' experience in emerging market debt and is highly regarded in the European market (2). His investment approach is focused on low risk, high information ratio trades, based on proprietary models.
Luc D’hooge, who joined Vontobel in April 2013 from Dexia, is excited about the possibilities presented by the new fund for Vontobel’s clients, stating: “Hard-currency emerging market debt has excellent risk-return potential and could represent a great addition to a balanced portfolio, even alongside an allocation to local emerging debt”.
The launch of the Emerging Market Debt Fund illustrates Vontobel's commitment to expand its fixed income business, which currently manages USD 10 billion of assets, and develop its emerging market expertise for the benefit of investors. In addition to the Vontobel Fund – Emerging Markets Debt, the company also manages an Emerging Markets Bond (local currency) Fund and an Eastern European Bond Fund.
